We all know Northern Cardinal’s style one way or another, which assembles and arranges a fine complex of ingredients, producing a masculine chypre effect. A beautiful blast of green notes are revivified by generous and sharp citrus notes in the opening, infused with the tender soft virtues of clary sage, with its distinctive herbal and balsamic breath. This is complete with just enough rose to add vastness to the composition, and a discernible floral freshness which grows as this fragrance develops.

All of this rapidly fuses with Northern Cardinal’s dark heart, consisting of leather, oakmoss, and patchouli. It is this trio which recalls the giants of masculine perfumery, which emphasises a captivating bitterness against an earthy floor, brightened with the sparks of the top notes. It is this tension which defines an entire category – a stylistics – which has an inimitable shape and curvature. It is at once robust yet plush, generous yet reserved. It demonstrates good form and allows it to speak for itself. Every note matters in this fragrance, repeating a central green theme dominated by patchouli, vibrating between the earth and the sky, like the perfume’s namesake bird, with a freshness recalling mint, geranium, roses, and camphor-tinged air, against darker impressions of leather, tobacco, and even bitter dark chocolate. Reprieve arrives in the form of musk with the boozy, darker side of vanilla, never losing sight of this leathery aromatic heart.
