Iris de Nuit achieves freshness by turning to the earth, all the way to the roots. Amongst a medley of angelica seed, ambrette, and carrot seed, it respects the impact of iris absolute. An extract from the rhizome of the flower, it is altogether buttery and waxy, woody and dry, stemmy green, and sweetly floral. It is a precious material, valued for its complexity and cost. Its earthy richness is set against the crispness of cedarwood, which has the double effect of reiterating the dry sensation of the fragrance whilst amping up its spicy and textural facets. Iris de Nuit is indeed nocturnal – melancholic, tempestuous, and grey as it is inflected with violet, where its characteristic green and aquatic notes add lift and tenderness to an otherwise demure composition. Subtle touches of ambergris add not only warmth and composure, but a saline air – Iris de Nuit remains a reserved and cool scent, despite its addictive velvety touch. It celebrates ionones/irones, an essential constituent of orris oil which ranges from the sweet and fruity, to green, woody, and powdery, offering a delightful series of modulations when worn. It is a luxury in the register of texture.
