Lampblack is a cornerstone of the Fzotic brand. Inspired by the smell of ink, this iridescent fragrance combines light and shadow to conjure an atmosphere of understated sophistication and refinement. Sweet orange, bitter grapefruit, and crisp black pepper illuminate a smoky, slightly industrial ink accord of nagarmotha, earthy vetiver, and leather.

Bruno’s Inspiration:
“Lampblack launched my career as a perfumer. I created it for an exhibition of small ink paintings that featured opaque, black India Ink contrasting with transparent, vivid colours. The art was dark and shadowy but also glowed with light and colour. Lampblack gets its name from Lampblack pigment which is used to make India Ink. Historically, it was made with soot collected from oil-burning lamps. For the fragrance, I developed an accord that smelled like ink. I used the essential oil of nagarmotha, a root related to vetiver, which has a slight petroleum odour. I wanted it to have the almost industrial smell of a printmaker's workshop. As a contrast, I added a sparkling citrus accord to give it shimmering brightness."

Made in the USA

Lampblack might remind you of cleanliness, and in particular, the smell of cresol and phenols reminiscent of soaps made from coal tar. However, Lampblack is intent upon a singular idea: the particular smell of dark pigment, an elemental material made from earth and fire, glistening as if gasoline floated on its aqueous surface. Exquisite soot, its aroma is vegetal, minerally, saline, and smoky – it stains all in the infinite hue of midnight black. Roots of vetiver and cypriol beat their deeply woody smell, moving through the fractures of a hot sun-blasted earth, seasoned with black pepper and inconspicuously lightened with sweet orange and bitter grapefruit. The result is an unusual quality of freshness, trailing with spiciness and weightless smoke – it is reassuring and salubrious. Close to the earth, Lampblack always looks up at the heavenly sky – until, ever so slightly, it begins to float.
