Trust us - even citrus fragrances promise great complexity and depth, especially when blended with quality ingredients. Everyone should have a citrus in their fragrance repertoire - for its cutting freshness, its fleeting luxury, and its ability to bolster one's mood instantly.Citrus notes are highly volatile, and while that makes for sizzling and energetic wear, this means that they're quick to dissipate. Making the most of the situation - this is an opportunity to treat citrus colognes like refreshing tonics, to be sprayed on abundantly and frequently. However, modern interpretations anchor these fleeting notes with functional fixatives for added longevity.

This sample pack is a veritable fruit bowl of mixed citruses. Start with the traditional assortment: in Acqua di Parma's Colonia, the humble lemon is elevated onto the plane of confidently sexy and sizzling Italian energy, oozing nonchalant elegance. Sicilian lemon is enlivened with orange and bergamot and a generous dash of aromatic herbs, harmonising on a discrete base of lavender, sandalwood, and powdery musks. A similar style is achieved in Santa Maria Novella's Russa Cologne, inspired by a classic Russian cologne that dates back to the early 1800s. Lemon verbena sings next to bitter green petitgrain and the soft touch of lavender water. A mixture of spicy clove and ambery tolu balsam at the base warms these citrus notes slightly. For ultra cleanliness, try the neroli-dominant Cousin Matthew from Penhaligon's. Simple yet gorgeous, the charming scent of orange leaf reveals its nuances: sweet, pure, natural, slightly green, slightly bitter, and slightly soapy. With a drop of mint and mandarin, this scent has excellent freshness.

Move closer to the modern with Colonia Pura (Acqua di Parma). The focal note is bitter orange, capturing this while creating a scent evocative of pure white - thank a blanket of prismatic white musks refreshed with opulent narcissus flower and a tempting dose of spicy-cool coriander seed. Bergamask (Orto Parisi) pushes citrus-and-musk to its limits. Ultra-modern in style, the fleeting spicy freshness of bergamot is alloyed with a monolithic cocktail of musks. The combined result produces an amiable metallic sheen which glosses over the composition; reflective, sharp, and above all else, long-lasting freshness. In Remarkable People (Etat Libre d'Orange), you can't miss the grapefruit, that bitter and slightly 'dirty' citrus note magically improved with champagne, cool green cardamom, and a curiously earthy and deeply spicy pepper accord. This gives the already sharp and sizzling aroma of grapefruit effervescence and joyous lift. Speaking of sizzle, Andy Tauer's Orange Star hypercharges a generous melange of orange, clementine, red mandarin, lemongrass, and orange leaf, imparting wonderful saturated orange-coloured intensity, and then balances this with warm tonka bean and ambergris - in many ways reminiscent of salted caramel. Together: Crêpes Suzette, obviously. Finally, to finish the gourmand theme: Fils de Dieu (Etat Libre d'Orange) is a culinary citrus where lime imparts an exciting tropical energy. A tropical motif is built with a clever accord of lime-spiked coconut rice that evokes a distinctly humid air, cutting this with an intense freshness via ginger and coriander leaves. Supremely tempting, and ultra fresh!
