Inspired by Vaslav Nijinski, in collaboration with Mx Justin Vivian Bond. The faun, a creature of sylvan life, awakens from his mid-day sleep and contemplates his morning's pursuit of alluring nymphs. In his reflections, the chase takes on libidinous proportions as he seeks to satisfy his desire. It is a beautiful memory — but did it really happen? Images fade. Those delicious sensations that tease his mind grow vague, and he cannot recapture the events. Reality eludes him, confusion reigns, until he is no longer certain if he is remembering fact or fancy. Once again, he is overcome by sleep, which can only lead to more dreaming. In 1912, when Nijinsky danced the story in Paris, he created a scandal. Shameless, the critics declared. The carnal subtext of Mallarme’s poem had become an explicit expression of a sexual appetite. The ballet went beyond the sensual to a demonstration of powerful virility.

Something for the connoisseurs. A leather chypre in classic style with a distinctive spicy green top note of leather, spiked with pepper and cinnamon which call to mind the scandalous Bandit (Robert Piguet, 1944), and the deeply rich note of immortelle employed in Sables (Annick Goutal, 1985), which stands in for the usual oakmoss note, imparting a uniquely withered and sultry feeling. Deep in the heart is an inky, quasi-animalic core with woody nuances, with the bitter edge of myrrh anchored to sturdy orris root and rose, flushed with a particularly tar-like bergamot that is more like leather than citrus, and haunting incense that offers an unusual but effective smoky freshness. There are a lot of notes here, but this is the nature of the true chypre, as shady and sylvan as ever, ultimately coming together as a coherent and singular idea.
